Deadline for Banker’s Cup Nominations …

Posted: January 26, 2010: 12:27 pm

The deadline for nominating a deserving man or woman to receive the 2010 Banker’s Cup Award is Wednesday, January 27 at 4 p.m. in the Chamberbclogo1lobby. One well documented nomination is all it takes. Here’s the nominating criteria:

• To honor persons dedicated to making Winter Haven better for their having lived here.

• Consider the range of activities and the involvement of the person you nominate and their positive impact on our community.

• Neither age nor occupation should be a factor. Every living resident of Winter Haven, of exemplary character, is a potential candidate.

• Social standing is not relevant; respect and integrity are.

• Traditionally an award is voted by the Selection Committee for both a woman and a man, if worthy candidates are presented.

• Activities should be considered only if they were truly for the community good. For example, work done for one’s personal hobby would be given less importance than work volunteered to serve the needs of others.

• It is not a popularity contest. The number of letters received is never a deciding factor; one sincere, well-documented letter may be enough.

• If merited, a previous recipient may receive the award again.

• It is appropriate to honor person for freely-given service over a period of years.

• The question is, “Who has made the most positive impact on making the Winter Haven area a better place to live?”

• There are no forms to be completed. Groups or individuals are invited to send nomination letters to Bankers Cup Selection Committee, c/o Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce, P. O. Box 1420, Winter Haven, FL 33882-1420. Deadline for 2010 Nominations is Wednesday, January 27.

Watch tomorrow for a sample menu from our fine Taste of Winter Haven participating restaurants.

Troutmann: Economy Remains the Focus

Posted: November 18, 2009: 8:34 am

Winter Haven Chamber’s Legislative and Public Policy Committee hosts Polk County lawmaker – by Justin Glover

4259WINTER HAVEN—Outgoing State Representative Baxter G. Troutman (left) recently provided an in-depth preview of his final legislative session, saying Florida’s economy remains “front and center” for lawmakers as they convene in Tallahassee.

Rep. Troutman spoke to members of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative and Public Policy Committee. The Legislative and Public Policy Committee was formed by the Winter Haven Chamber to address the public policy concerns of local businesses at city, county and state levels.

At the meeting, Troutman said he expected lawmakers would be forced to trim another $1-3 billion off of an already scaled-back state budget. Unlike other issues addressed by the legislature which sometimes have limited impacts, the state’s budget is one in which, “we’re all affected,” according to Troutman.

Troutman, who is term-limited in 2010, serves as Chairman of the powerful House General Government Policy Committee and has represented Polk County since 2002. Look for his committee to be involved in several important debates next session, including another high priority for lawmakers and businesses: energy policy. Troutman said he believes the Legislature will pass a sweeping energy package aimed at finding more sustainable energy sources. At the same time, Troutman said he’ll make sure the final bill doesn’t overburden small businesses with huge costs for compliance.

“We’ll keep the ratepayer in mind,” Troutman said.

Property insurance reform will also demand attention in Tallahassee, and Troutman expects to again support a measure giving consumers more choices in insuring their homes and businesses. Earlier this year, the Legislature passed HB 1171 to allow property insurance consumers to choose whether to pay a higher premium for private coverage or opt for coverage through state-run Citizens Property Insurance. The bill was vetoed by Gov. Crist.

Of the measure, Troutman said, “If the consumer wants to pay, why should government get in the way?”

Polk County residents could also see the debate over commuter rail resurrected. Troutman said it’s possible House and Senate leaders will call for a Special Session in December to deal with public transportation and the long-debated issue of expanded gambling on Florida’s Seminole reservations.

Complete our legislative issues survey now at this link (survey closes at 3 p.m. today).

The Chamber’s next Government and Legislative Affairs Committee meeting is today, Wednesday, November 18 at 4 p.m. in the Chamber’s Coleman Auditorium. Sam Killebrew will present an overview of the status and challenge in addressing the Hometown Democracy amendment. The Committee will also review the results of a Chamber member legislative issues survey. Chamber members are invited to attend.

Lake Levels Nix Christmas Boat Parade

Posted: November 11, 2009: 3:53 pm

2690184825_13b797d456

Roger Griffiths, Executive Director of the Lake Region Lakes Management District (often referred to as the Canal Commission) reported at their October Board Meeting that lake levels in the southern Chain of Lakes were 1 foot 4 inches below 2008 levels (and last year’s parade barely made an abbreviated route). With disappointing rainfall levels from this month’s late season tropical storm, it appears certain that the canals will not be deep enough to allow the parade to go on.

Over the years the Chamber has learned that the success of the Boat Parade lies in people being able to navigate their boats through the Chain to form the parade in Lake May. Current levels severely limit boats with only a driver — not to mention fully loaded craft.

The Chamber does not like to disappoint boaters or the thousands of people who watch from shore … but safety is our first priority and shallow canals cause too many problems. The parade will return when lake levels do.

We are making the announcement at this time to allow residents who have “Parade Parties” to plan accordingly.

“Haven View Fall Issue” – Served The Way You Asked …

Posted: October 6, 2009: 3:03 pm

HavenViewFall09 Cover

Our 2009 Membership Survey produced a variety of interesting information. When we asked you the question, “In terms of receiving Chamber communications, my preferred source is _____________?”

Eighty-three percent of the respondents said their preferred source for communications was e-mail. Fifteen percent preferred printed publications and 15% preferred blog posts. Based upon this response we are going to try sending “Haven View” via this blog. You can access the Fall issue here.

You will find the same high production values you have come to expect — and it is a much more “green” way to distribute this information.

This month you will find information on our 2009 Economic Summit, Industry Award winners and much more. Take a look, download or print the file.

Let us know how this works for you. We will re-evaluate the process for 2010-11.
